Active Vacations at Hawaii

If you are planning a trip to one of the Hawaiian islands
and don't want your typical lie-on-the-beach and drink
mai-tais vacation, consider going to Maui or Kauai. In
Maui, you can reach beyond the ordinary and take a
challenging horseback riding trip down to the bottom of a
massive meteoric crater and back up again.

You can tour the old Kauai sugar plantations that were once
a mainstay of the Hawaiian economy and witness the old
fashioned process of harvesting sugar cane and turning it
to table sugar.

These are examples of activities that are different from
the usual. Other activities gaining popularity with
tourists in Hawaii are hiking, rock climbing, scuba
diving and tours of ancient and historical sites.

Ride a Horse into a Volcanic Crater

On Maui, tourists flock every morning at sunrise, sometimes
as early as five, to see the gorgeous sunrise at the top of
Haleakala's summit at 10,000 feet. From the summit you can
see a shockingly colorful sky panorama, as well as the
entire Haleakala National Park. Tourists to Maui swear this
sunset is worth the early hour and lost sleep.

More adventurous tourists sign up for horseback rides that
leave in the morning, sometimes right after the sunset, and
thread through the rocky hillsides that descend into the
Haleakala crater. Along the way, you'll marvel at the
changing layers and colors in the rock formations along the
way, as well as the quiet atmosphere of the crater.
In fact, the crater has its own weather system.

The Haleakala Crater looks like a landscape similar to that
of mars with its different colors of red, yellow and black,
some bright and others dull. This Crater is the remnants of
once an active volcano that led to the formation of other
Hawaiian islands as well.

You'll be impressed with the agilty of trail horses as they
pick their way through rocks and steep ground. If you
aren't an experienced horse rider, you'll be surprised how
steeply the horses step down and you'll feel like you may
fall off! However, these trusty and experienced horses know
their way and won't stray from their duty of transporting
you safely.

After a five hour-long trip, you arrive at your
destination feeling very hungry. Tour guides serve you a
packed lunch at the bottom of the crater, which needless
to say, is delicious like all picnic meals.

All most all the tour operators in Maui offer different
trips to the crater by either bus, car or by horse. The
trail ride is an important part of the Hawaii excursion and
almost all islands offer it.

The Sugar Connection

If you are fortunate on your Hawaii trip to be able to
visit more than one of the islands, you'll love Kauai for
its connection with colonial American history. The island
is a showcase for the once ubiquitous sugar trade in the
Pacific. Some of the plantations are off the beaten path
and not offered with every tour package, but they are
definitely worth pursuing if you have an extra day there.

There is still one working plantation on the west side of
the island and the Kauai Sugar Plantation organizes tours
to this plantation for tourists. It is an experience to
see sugarcane plants sway in the breeze for acres and
fascinating to watch the huge and dusty machinery that
made it possible to turn this sweet tropical plant into
the world~s greatest weakness.

It is said that if you want to enjoy one of the most exotic
tropical holidays then you surely should visit Hawaii.
Hawaii boast of many beautiful islands where you can sit
back and relax sipping a mai-tai. Incase you're looking for
an active holiday then you should visit he islands of Maui
and Kauai. At Maui you can enjoy activities like a
challenging horseback riding down to the meteoric crater
and then a trip back up again.
