Hawaii: Our Most Exotic, Alluring State
by Eileen Vento

Hawaii is the state that "beckons." Its romantic charm
and South Seas-like feeling make you feel as though
you're really in another country, state of mind, or
dream world.

When one visits these islands, they have images of a
place of restful relaxation, a tropical haven,
something right out of Hollywood. In fact, there were
many films made here such as Fantasy Island. There is
an exquisite and peaceful resort here for honeymooners
named the Total Escape - another heaven in the
tropics.

Hawaii's formation and habitat is interesting in
itself. Hawaii was formed from volcanoes and it now has
a chain of islands that are the largest in the world.
You will find attractions there such as the "Grand
Canyon" of the Pacific which measures 3,000 feet deep
and 12 miles wide. There are red sand beaches along
with something unique: black sand beaches. You will see
the petroglyphs of canoes, warriors, and animals carved
into the rocks of the foothills of the islands. And,
all the other oceanic and tropical attractions are in
Hawaii as well. There are humpback whales, green sea
turtles, volcanoes, grand caves formed by ancient lava
tubes and partially filled with water from the sea. The
formations that helped to create the caves are ancient
lava tubes filled with spawning shrimp. The spawning
ship have a tendency to turn the water red.

Where else on earth have you heard of so many seeming-
ly strange but enticing treasures - and all in the
same vicinity, which, by the way, is relatively small.
Kauai is the oldest (over 6 million years) and wet-
test of the main Hawaiian Islands. Not only that, but
Mt. Wai-ale-ale, also on Kauai, is the wettest spot
on earth.

There is quite a bit on this island which has an area
of only 12 by 18 miles. You absolutely must see the sea
cliffs here which tower 3,000 feet above sea level and
are visible from Moloka'i's North Shore.

Lanai is the smallest main Hawaiian Island open to
visitors. There are 47 miles of coastline,
but very few swimming beaches.

Maui is the second largest main Hawaiian Island, a
frequent spot for honeymooners. The Valley Isle there
is built from the overlapping flows of two volcanoes,
Puu Kukui and Haleakala.

Oahu is the third largest island. The entire island
belongs to the City and County of Honolulu. It's regal
in its own way, as well. Iolani Palace, in downtown
Honolulu, is the only royal palace in the United
States.

Then, just to add to the magic of it all, seemingly
defying gravity and all the physics you've ever
studied is Kaena Point, in Oahu. Waves here, from both
directions, come crashing together. During the winter
months, waves at Kaena Point can reach well over 40
feet, higher than anywhere else in Hawaii.

Do you want to go now? This is a tropical paradise
right in the United States and no passport is required.
