A Family Vacation

Family vacation has become an annual feature for most
families these days. However, before they take to the road,
they spend hours, days and even weeks of indecision, stress,
and even a little fun planning the holiday. There are ways
by which you can have a little more fun and a little less
stress. Though it would be nice to say that it is possible
to eliminate all stress and anxiety, it is simply not
possible. But good planning can make the vacation a lot more
enjoyable.

A family vacation is not the same as a little family trip.
A family trip, lasting at most a few days, does not require
extensive planning. A weekend trip can be done on the spur
of the moment. A vacation, however, lasts more than a week
and requires that arrangements be made to ensure that
needs are taken care of. A vacation requires planning
advance preparation so that expenses are kept to a minimum
and that unexpected detours are not cause for extreme
alarm.

One of the first things that needs to be done is to decide
where to go on vacation. Some parents simply take it upon
themselves to decide, and then announce it to the rest of
the family. This cuts down on discussion and argument, and
leaves more time for preparation and less time for debate.
On the other hand, a family discussion can help everyone
feel included. However, it is highly unlikely that everyone
will agree on a destination. Some parents provide a list
of plausible destinations (most family vacations will not
be taken to the jungle) and allow discussion and then a
vote. This can be a democratic way of going about the
decision. However, once the ground rules are laid for
picking a destination, and once the destination is chosen,
it is important to stick with it.

Having taken the decision about the destination of the
family vacation, it is time to begin making preparations. It
is a good idea to ask everyone to contribute to the cost
even if it is just a couple of dollars a month. This makes
the vacation a shared goal and helps meet the high cost.
Then you need to map out the route and make a list of the
needed supplies. It is always better to choose a route that
has adequate rest stops, especially if you have smaller
children. Try and plan so that you will have days of
reasonable length. It is not advisable to push everyone to
exhaustion. It only leads to quarrels and frustration.

Remember to remain flexible so that if something en route
catches the eye, you can make a brief unplanned stop.
Finally, make sure that you have emergency supplies and food
and water with you on vacation. Take a few games and
activities so that kids remain busy in the car. Also carry a
cell phone just in case you need rescuing.
